FAQ Apr 15th, 2026

As the field of behavior analysis grows, so too does its reach. And with the explosion of technology and remote learning, more communities in more places can now access critical ABA therapy services.

While venturing into new territory, behavior analysts remain ethically obligated to stay aware of their biases and abilities, especially as it relates to serving individuals with unique needs and diverse backgrounds. Behavior analysts must also be keenly aware that all families have their own cultures, shaped by their unique experiences of the world. And the same is true of the behavior analyst.

How do I assess my own cultural biases?

It’s up to the behavior analyst to evaluate their own biases, as well as those of their supervisees and trainees.

Fulfilling this obligation further ensures that other ethical responsibilities are upheld:

  • Nondiscrimination (1.08)
  • Nonharassment (1.09)
  • Awareness of Personal Biases and Challenges (1.10)
  • Incorporating and Addressing Diversity (4.07)

So how do we get there?

Evidence-based procedures for cultural responsiveness include self-monitoring, self-assessment, and self-management. In a recent webinar, Natalia Baires, Ph.D., BCBA-D, explains the methodology, examining each in greater detail.

Cultural Responsiveness in Action: Tools to Enhance Self-Awareness in ABA Services also reviews the RESPECTFUL model, which emphasizes human diversity and its effects on a client's growth and personal sense of wellbeing.

Cultural humility as a lifelong process

Dr. Baires discusses how these variables can have additional implications for behavior analytic service delivery. The presentation also reflects on various obstacles clinicians may encounter, along with strategies for overcoming potential barriers.
