As individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders age out of childhood and school-based services, a number of factors become important. Ethical and practical considerations of this transition will be examined, with an eye on maximizing the autonomy and self-determination of the individual.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will identify "infantilization" and consider programmatic issues in avoiding it.
2. Participants will discriminate programming that promotes independence from programming that creates dependence.
3. Participants will identify factors that are important in the fading of service provision.
About the Presenter
It was very informative and well explained. The sections of videos made it easier to pay attention
Ethical considerations to practice are some important aspects we need to follow and the presenter has nicely conveyed this in his presentation on ASD transitioning to Aduthood
Bobby Newman is compassionate BCBA, and it came across in his presentation. I appreciated how he used his personal experiences to embellish on the topic, and it kept me focused. I would definitely watch more videos with him.
This course brings out the facts which some of us do neglect, regarding challenged persons. Most of them are still capable, to a great degree, especially if they are trained, and most especially in doing things for selves rather than in just educational status. These, the course polishes out unto us to remember.
This course recognize the true challenges (and me, as a BCaBA and mother of a 25 years young) we face as professionals and parents (or Legal Guardians) of adults that could do a job, but most importantly must be interested in the job and be properly train to do so successfully. This is not an easy task, and ongoing progress is being worked upon. We are not there yet. ABA provides a light at the end of the tunnel.
I deal with this now in my current work setting. We have to transition a lot of students from HS to real world, although some of them choose to stay in school for the additional time. This hits home. Thank you :)
I am very busy and generally never write reviews, but it was so refreshing and surprising to listen to this man who has such a heart for adults with disabilities. His passion, creativity, rawness, utter care, and brutal honesty was so authentic that I listened closely to every word. He is also a natural storyteller, which made the lecture all the more colorful and profound. This is a man after my own heart, practicing behavior analysis from the heart, and I wish there were more like him in the field.
Really enjoyed this webinar and found it interesting and engaging. Highly relevant to the work I do and lots of great information/ examples!
This was an excellent course on a topic that is so relevant.
