A Preliminary Investigation
Skill-based treatments developed from practical functional assessments are capable of producing durable, socially-meaningful outcomes with respect to dangerous problem behavior. Although successful outcomes have been achieved across a variety of contexts and participant profiles, implementation of these procedures may be limited due to perceived risks associated with escalation in problem behavior, which is likely to occur when treatments rely on extinction that sometimes requires physical management. This presentation will begin with a summary of the underlying assumptions and methods unique to the practical functional assessment and skill-based treatment process. Then, an evaluation of an “enhanced choice” model for minimizing risks during treatment will be reviewed. In the evaluation, socially validated outcomes were achieved with all participants; dangerous problem behavior never occurred for three participants and rarely occurred for two participants. Findings will be connected to a recently administered survey regarding the nature, feasibility, and social acceptability of physical management procedures associated with behavior analytic service delivery. Implications of enhanced choice procedures for safe and dignifying behavior analytic practice will be reflected upon, with special consideration given to the commitments of trauma-informed care.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this presentation, attendees should be able to:
- Describe a set of procedures for effectively treating dangerous problem behavior that explicitly avoids physical management
- Describe the distinguishing features of an “enhanced choice model” of skill-based treatment
- Describe how the enhanced choice model is congruous with commitments and practices of trauma-informed care
About the Presenter
I would like more trouble shooting and plans attached to this training to more effectively implement it. I wish there was more ED examples to go off of.
This was very informative and well presented. I would love to hear more about the topic and see other presentations from this presenter. Nicely done.
That wes realy interesting and valuable.Thank you!
Thanks a lot to the presenter for a nice presentation , I learned another new technique to work with problem behaviour of my kids.
Awesome presentation. Great use of homor and great engagement. He was informative and entertaining at the same time. You can see his excitement about his work.
This was SO informative and SO helpful. Thank you so much!!!
Good. Some times, we Providers tend to treat what we don't first control. The presentation reminds to do first thing first. In addition, elopement out of the building, and some times into the road, is common in this "teaching field." This course opens our eyes to know that we can create an "elopement room" in the building where the student could go into instead of running into the streets.
I enjoyed the training; Dr. Rajaraman was great (loved the humor and passion in his voice). I am a visual person and would have loved to see some videos of the actual models he shared. Other than that, it was an eye opener and I appreciated his insight.
One of my favorite CEUs!
This is a great CEU. My only concern is that it didnt cover cases over 15 years old and I am personally very interested in learning about crisis management with clients that had no ABA intervention in place and that started BIP at older age (with dangerous Bx that posed risk to the client and others.
