The most current research indicates that 1 in 59 Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) individuals are being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (Shield & Meier, 2012); however, access to critical treatment, therapies, support, and research is scarce for these individuals and their families/caregivers creating substantial barriers in overall treatment and progress.
Join Stephanie Dille-Huggins, MA, BCBA who has been serving the D/HH + ASD community and their families for the past decade as she guides participants through an introductory course that provides training and insight into understanding the D/HH + ASD diagnosis to provide culturally responsive ABA-based services for this population. Participants will also be provided training on skill sets that must be developed among behavior analysts to ensure that they are practicing in their scope of competency and be provided guidance on considerations for practitioners prior to starting therapy and treatment with D/HH + ASD individuals. Participants will be guided through several case reviews of D/HH + ASD individuals that demonstrated substantial success in receiving ABA-based services rooted in cultural responsiveness before being guided through the importance of professionals developing advocacy skills within their own practice in order to effectively and ethically serve this population and their families.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will develop the ability to identify initial steps in serving the D/HH + ASD community.
- Participants will be able to list and describe at least 3 approaches to implementing culturally responsive treatment in serving the D/HH + ASD community.
- Participants will be able to list and describe at least 3 approaches to professional advocacy that behavior analysts can develop to increase ABA-based service outcomes for D/HH + ASD individuals.
About the Presenter
There are not many trainings offered for this topic! This course was great at laying the foundation of the D/HH culture and inner workings. I learned about concepts that I had not heard of before! It was a great introduction course and can't wait to learn more from Mrs. Dille-Huggins.
This was a very informative course. Thanks to the instructor’s sharp knowledge and keeping the subject stimulating and quite initiating. I learned so much!
I appreciate all the knowledge you have and I'm grateful that you share with us.
This was another great training. Ms. Hille was very informative, passionate, and provided great examples that we need to think through as practitioners.
Absolutly amazing! loved this course. I have learned so much.
There a lot of barriers to working with kids that are D/HH+ASD. This training breaks down some of the barriers and educates on being culturally responsive. There are not many providers that work with this population and this training helps provide resources for those of us who are willing to grow our knowledge and competency to include these individuals!
I think this course should be a requirement for ALL BCBA's currently practicing and serving individuals within the autistic community, regardless of having current D/HH clients. This was very eye-opening and informative!
very very interesting and thank you for bringing such wonderful insights
Very good!
This instructor exuded passion in her training. It was evident that this is a topic that was important to her and that she wants to share this knowledge. I learned a lot.
