THE CHANGING FACE OF ABA: CULTURAL COMPETENCY ACROSS GENERATIONS
5:45 pm - 6:40 pm EST
1 CEU
When clinicians think of cultural competency, they often think of those with different religions or ethnic or racial backgrounds, among other factors. A factor that is not commonly considered, however, is age. The generations each experienced different contingencies that shaped different values and norms. Knowledge of these generational differences is key to ensuring smooth work with learners of different age groups, as well as their families, staff and caretakers. How and when to seek consultation, and even when a referral might be required, are explored.
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will identify generations of learners and family and support staff.
- Attendees will describe how to seek out needed supervision/consultation when outside scope of competency.
- Attendees will describe potential consequences of making mistakes in working with different generations.
- Attendees will identify personal factors that might necessitate the referral of a client.
