Going Beyond the Task List with Instructional Design: An Overview of Behavior-Based Instructional Design Techniques

Going Beyond the Task List with Instructional Design: An Overview of Behavior-Based Instructional Design Techniques Project Follow Through represents the largest education experiment ever conducted in the United States. Multiple educational models were evaluated in the project, including Direct Instruction and Behavior Analysis. Across all domains, Direct Instruction came out on top. The biggest different between Direct Instruction and the other models was the focus on instructional design principles. This current workshop will introduce attendees to the foundations of behavior-analytic instructional design. I will focus on analyzing larger instructional goals (i.e., composite skills) into specific component skills and conducting a features analysis for complex skills, such as concepts and principles. I will also share a variety of sample materials and resources to ensure our instruction produces the outcomes we want.

Objectives

  • State a wide range of examples of component skills when given a composite-level skill
  • State what instructional design is and is not
  • State examples and non-examples of concepts, and the three requirements necessary for conceptual behavior
